Friend Friday: Joanna Tilley

I am very excited to share a little about my friend Joanna… I call her Jo. Sometimes Jo Jo.

She is awesomeness. She is quirkiness. She is hilariousness.

I met Joanna in middle school when I had very little friends. We had P.E. together. She let me borrow her Umbro shorts more than a few times but we were never really friends.

In high school though we became friends and I have now known her for 16 yrs. I am very proud of that length of time considering how friendships can be tricky.

People change. People move. People lose touch.

This is Joanna.

Her facebook “about me” states:

“one nation, under a groove!

good mornin’ ladies and gentlemen…

boys and …………’ girls

this is your captain with no name speakin’

and i’m here to rock your world!”

That is why I love her. She is the most fun person to hang out with. She makes me laugh. She has seen me cry. She has made me laugh when I was crying.

She is a photographer, a dancer, a drama geek, a fashion fanatic, kick ball star, kickboxing chick  and  wonderful friend.

She has been a part of some very wonderful memories…

I was at her wedding and when I asked if she could be in my wedding she said “I’ll make it happen” even though she was booked for a wedding two states away the day before my wedding. She drove some crazy hours to make it and I will never forget that.

She is that person you can go a month without talking, but when you do, it’s like you had just seen her.

She is… low maintenance, high energy.

I don’t always get to tell her how much she means to me, but words would not suffice to explain how much.

I just love her… for accepting me, for letting me be a part of her life, for being that person who knows where I came from.

I just love us. The us that changes and disagrees and make mistakes and creates things and continues to be friends.

Friend Friday…wait Saturday… ERIN SUNDAY

So because of my hectic schedule, Friend Friday got moved to today…so maybe we call this one, Someone Special Saturday lol I kid I kid.

Today’s friend is Erin Sunday. Besides having one of the coolest names, she is one cool chick. I met Erin “officially” back in January of last year but had known her through various online sites first. I have known her awesome boyfriend Will Vastine (photographer extraordinaire) for a bit longer and have always admired his work. When I saw that Erin had started photography, I started to admire hers as well.

Meeting people from the internet doesn’t always work out how you plan. Sometimes (often times) people create a whole new online personality for marketing or “friends” with people strictly based on what they can do for each other. When you see them face to face, they are sometimes nothing like what you expected. Erin was just as I expected. She is gorgeous, sweet and quirky fun.

What stood out with meeting Erin, and what I have learned with my experiences with her, is that she is very real. This word gets used a lot I know with people trying desperately trying to “let the world know” they are genuine. But with Erin, she really is. She is passionate, she’s a fighter and she is just a girl who is trying. Trying to move on, trying to start over, trying to find herself, trying to gain forgiveness for mistakes (which we all are right?), trying to make her dreams her life.

I appreciate that Erin has always shared things with me from her health, to her regrets, to her past. That is important when I become friends with someone. I truly believe until you know deep down who they are, you can’t know how good a friend they will be to you.

Well… she’s a great friend.

So meet Erin…. Sunday…. my friend.

“Here is the part where I tell you about myself. Let’s see. Well, for starters, I was named Erin Louise Sunday by my parents back in good ol’ 1985. I have had quite the… hmm… interesting life and could go on for hours and hours in posts upon posts; but I won’t. Not yet anyway. You will have to come visit me at my blog whenever I start back up again. *wink* I will tell you that I have been to many places in my few adults years. I made decisions, both bad and good. I found my way back home and now you find me here, talking with you. I currently work at a retail shop in the mall and enjoy photography as a beginning side business. I have other projects going on right now, but they are not ready to share just yet. 😉 I began shooting about 2 years ago, thanks to the persistent encouragement of the love of my life, and it has been an amazing journey already. I have learned so much and hope to continue doing so! I hope that you have enjoyed my little blabbing session. I know I am not Kim Scott, but I sure can try to be somewhat close to that level of cool. ;)”

Who do you look up to/ inspires you? “Oh man! There are many people I look up to. I could list them all but that would take forever and I would most definitely forget someone… So… I will just say Jesus. He is pretty much the tops. And my dad. I am turning into quite the Daddy’s girl (about 25 years too late if you ask me).”

What three adjectives describe you? “Quirky, passionate, determined. Mind you, I just asked the people I am sitting with [I can’t help it… I am insecure (AH! That is another adjective!!). ha!]”

What type of artist are you? “Photographer, finger painter, stick figure illustrator, craft enthusiast. Yep… I think that sums it up. 😉

What is your biggest source of inspiration? “Life’s triumphs, of course. What else?”

How would you describe your style? “My photography style? I guess I am still kind of figuring that out. I have dabbled in a little of everything but I really enjoy the more heavily art-inspired, theatrical style. It is so fun!! I love the production that goes into it. My personal (fashion) style has been described as “indie mixed with hippie.” I hope that is a good thing!”

What is your daily routine? “Wake up. Fall back asleep. Wake up again. (Literally) roll out of bed. Shower… maybe. Brush the hair and style if needed. Dress and head out to work. Work for a few hours. Come home and fix dinner. Work on photo or craft stuff and then eventually go to bed. It switches most days but that is normal, I guess.”

What drives your passion for your work? “I guess just the fact it is the one thing I truly enjoy through and through. I feel incredibly lucky to have been offered the opportunity to learn photography a couple years ago. It is the most treasured gift I have.”

What would people be shocked to know about you? “I was born with three elbows? Kidding. I was (always will be) a Marine. Not kidding.”

What is some of your favorite icons? “David Bowie. Madonna. Dolly Parton. Julie Garland. Julie Andrews. Danny Kay. Bing Crosby. Frank Sinatra. Bette Midler. Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen. Am I answering the question correctly? haha.”

Photos: by Julia Arielle Cox

What is important to you? “My family and friends are SO important to me. Without them, my life would be so boring and pointless. Also, I have learned recently how important my health is to me.”

What technique/style do you tend to use most? “I use the technique of kick-ass! ;)”

Who is your favorite artist? “Drew Gardner. Richard Avedon. Kurt Halsey. Ray Caesar. Jim Houser. Oh man, so many others I could list! Can you tell I am indecisive? ;)”

What is your favorite brand of jeans? “Typically any kind I get from my sisters that fit (I am a hand-me-down kind of girl). In all seriousness, I don’t wear jeans enough anymore to give me a reason to buy a new pair that is nice so I can’t really say I have a favorite brand. I think the last time I did, it was Jordache (Don’t worry… I was in 3rd grade). ha!”

“If you like, please say hi at any of the places below. I enjoy making friends. :-)”

Love notes: two

So today I share my second love note to Jonathan and some other love notes from some awesome peeps who decided to join:) It always makes me smile when people share genuinely… out of a desire to “just share” and not out of obligation or pressure to fit in or keep up. There are no rules, no judgements on these, just admiration for the courage it takes to show the world how we each see love.

In our own perfect way.

These made me so happy to be doing this!

Mine is something special to Jonathan and I… I usually say “come give me a kiss” and he says “i’ll meet you in the middle” I shot this one also with my iPhone 8mm:)

Stephanie‘s to her soldier husband made me cry:

Jen‘s was a dedication to the start of new and exciting love:

Nic‘s was adorable and candid:

Becky chose to write a note of hope for a future love:

Every one of these videos make me believe in giving everything I have to the person I love. Thanks ladies, you inspired me today.

Wanna know what this whole love notes thing is? Find out by clicking HERE🙂

I will continue to share more as this project continues:) Anyone who wants to participate, just send me a link or video!

On another note, this is a sneak from a project I am eager to share more about soon!

Love notes: one

So it’s no secret that I’m a sentimental kind of girl. It’s why I take a thousand photos a month, cry at the sappiest of lyrics and take video of every moment I can possibly capture.

I am afraid of forgetting.

Jonathan asked me the other day if I would remember sitting in a Panda Express. I said “I think so…” but started taking photos on my hisptamatic just in case we didn’t.

A month from now will mark the one year mark of when Jonathan and I “re-connected” technically, but in most ways… first met. So I decided to make love notes for the next month so that we don’t forget how special this time is for us. My friend Rhi did something similar a while ago and I always thought it would be fun to do. My first one is a saying that we say all the time “love you today” and I shot this little video on my phone with the 8mm camera app. It’s like hipstamatic for video…I can’t even handle it… it’s so awesome.

Same friend… Rhi… introduced me to stop motion… seen in this video from my visit with her back in November in the UK… and mine is in no way as good as she makes hers, but maybe someday…

For you Jonathan…

Love note: ONE

I will be sharing some other lovely people’s “love notes” soon. If you wanna be a part of all the fun… just leave me a comment so I can find you:)

Friend Friday: Jae

When I was making my plan for the blog in 2011 and started making notes for my Friend Friday feature, I immediately knew one of my best friends Jae would be on that list.

What I didn’t know was how different writing about him today would be in comparison to what I would have written the day I made that list.

I met Jae two years ago at a photography meetup in San Antonio. He wasn’t a photographer, he was a Med student who was tagging along with a friend. We immediately formed a connection and stayed friends after that night.

Jae soon left to do charity work in Haiti and much of our initial interaction was via the internet. We spent hours debating politics, discussing religion and dreams and never argued over who was right. He was the single most noncombative person I’ve ever met.

He knew my favorite candy, knew the perfect thing to say when I needed advice or support or a slap in the face.

Jae was that friend who was easy to like and love and respect. He had that smile that made you smile upon seeing it. He gave his life to charity. He always believed his life was so blessed that he should return the blessings to others.

He was smart and intuitive. He made sure I believed in myself when it seemed no one else did. He loved his friends so deeply and we all loved him like a brother.

He offered me a hand, a shoulder, an ear and his heart and to that I will love him forever.

We shared everything about our lives and I held no secrets from him. Jae, however, held one important secret from me…

He did and for many years suffer from severe depression. I knew him from two years and was completely shocked that I could miss something so important in such an important friends life. I could not understand how I missed it.

But Jae was amazing in that he only thought of others. He never complained about having to sit through my rants and tear filled stories at 2 am. He was the only person who was as nocturnal as I.

If you can have friend soul mates… he is mine.

Three months ago, Jae took his own life. The struggles he dealt with alone got to be too much.

I can’t explain the pain, anger and guilt that comes with this type of experience. I have gone back and forth many times trying to decide if I would share his passing.

After talks with his sister and from my own conviction, I felt it important that I be honest and share my thoughts on everything I have felt.

I have struggled with his passing for months and tried so hard to find a reason for it all. I haven’t found it. But I’ve resolved, I’m not supposed to. I have to focus on the amazing friendship I had with one of the most inspiring people to enter my life.

I have to remember:

His face
His laugh
His ability to teach not criticize
long talks about our families
Star wars marathons
Circus peanuts
sunsets
sunrises
reading books at the park
Driving to the coast
him trying with no success to get me to LOVE hot dogs (with relish)
his intense work ethic
His ability to meet strangers and make them his friend
me trying to get him to get a Facebook page
Indie mixtapes
Walmart adventures

And never forget that he taught me:

How important is can be for someone to accept you just as you are.
How important those little moments can be when they are the last.
Life is much more fulfilling when you are helping others.
Friends can save your life.
We are all the same.

I miss him dearly but I will thank God that I had a special time with him.

Although he is no longer a part of my world, he will never leave my heart.

start focusing
start doing

Happy Birthday Jen!

You can't turn back the clock. But you can wind it up again. -Bonnie Prudden

It’s her birthday. It’s not just her day… it’s her year, her moment, her life.

She chooses to not look back. She chooses to move forward. She chooses happiness. She chooses passion… always.

She doesn’t focus on what she can’t change, what others can’t accept and what she can not control.

She looks ahead to the biggest of dreams she has for herself, for her daughter, for her “family/friends”.

For she knows the clock can not be stopped, reversed or slowed.

So she wears it as proof of the years and  months and days and hours and minutes she has put into this life just trying to make the best of it.

Because…

there is no guarantee of tomorrow.

Today this is your day Jen.

Happy Birthday!

I love you.
